OUR PROGRAMS
Stichting Standbeeld Mahatma Gandhi (hereafter: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Foundation) is organizing each year on the 2nd of October, to celebrate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
The purpose of these programs is to create a greater awareness about Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of Non-Violence for resolving political and social conflicts.
International Day of Non-Violence
This program is organized on the 2nd of October from 10.00 hrs to 13.00 hrs in the Peace Palace – The Hague (Carnegieplein 2).
Our foundation has been organizing this program every year since 2014. This program is strongly supported by the Carnegie Foundation and The Municipality of The Hague.
Distinguished speakers as Mr. A. Peterle (former Prime Minister of Slovenia), Mr. P. Feith (Senior Dutch Diplomat and International Crisis Management Expert), H.E. Mr. K. van Baar (Dutch Ambassador of Human Rights), H.E. Mr. V.B. Koloane (Ambassador of South Africa), H.E. Mr. J.S. Mukul (former ambassador of India to The Netherlands), H.E. Mr. Nandan Prasad (former ambassador of India to the Netherlands), H.E. Mr. Venu Rajamony (Ambassador of India to the Netherlands), Mr. Joris Voorhoeve (Chair of The Netherlands’ Commission on Peace and Security and former Co-Chair of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict, Former Minister Minister of Defense of The Netherlands), Mr. Eric Niehe (former ambassador of The Netherlands to India), Mr. Rabin Baldewsingh (former Deputy Mayor of The Hague) Mr. Lionel Veer (Dutch Ambassador to Unesco) and Mr. Erik de Baedts (General Director of the Carnegie Foundation) addressed the audience throughout the years.
Participants in this program include high profile individuals and representatives of institutions and organizations which have a link to peace & justice for the society; for example: academic institutions, embassies, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Municipality, Political Parties, OPCW, Europol, Red Cross and general public including students.
Gandhi Jayanti in Amsterdam
This program is held on the 2nd of October from 16.30 hrs to 18.00 hrs at the Gandhi Monument in Amsterdam (Churchill-laan). Our foundation has been celebrating this day since 1990, when we established the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the center of Amsterdam. This statue was unveiled by the then Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Prof. Ruud Lubbers.
Gandhi Jayanti is a street function organized in the open where everyone, including the passers-by, are welcome to participate. Students of Dongeschool and Sri Laksmi School regularly participate in this program. This program also attracts many members of the Surinami Hindustani community. The program is supported by Borough of Amsterdam South, Embassy of India and India Tourism.
